Jack and the Beanstalk

Growing up, I’m sure you heard of the story “Jack and the Beanstalkโ€ If you haven’t, I’ll give you a quick run down to catch you up. Jack was a poor young boy who lived alone with his widowed mother. One day, she sent him to the market to sell their cow, and Jack ended up trading it for five magic beans. When he came home, his mother was upset to discover what he had done. I would’ve been upset too! Imagine how much money he could’ve received for selling their cow. I mean, could you see yourself doing something like that and believing a man that told you the beans were magical while risking your mother’s wrath when you came home with no money? Me either!

The Giant

Lucky for Jack, when his angry mother threw the beans out of the window, a giant beanstalk grew overnight. Jack woke up to discover the magical beanstalk and decided to climb it. He found a giant’s home with the giant’s wife inside cooking and asked for some food. She fed him, but when the giant came home, Jack hid because he was scared. The giant could smell that an Englishman was inside and started making threats. His wife assured him that there was no boy inside while Jack escaped.

Defeating the Giant

This process continues for a few days as Jack steals things from the giant’s home: a sack of gold, a golden egg, and a magical harp. One day, when Jack tried to steal the harp, it cried out to the giant that she was being stolen, and the giant took off after Jack. As he climbed down the beanstalk the giant pursued him, but when Jack reached the ground he ran inside, grabbed an ax, and chopped the beanstalk down. The giant fell and died! From there Jack and his mother lived happily ever after, and were rich, might I add!

Size Didn’t Matter

So what does that have to do with giants falling, you ask? Well, the giant was a huge problem for Jack, but although his problem was bigger than he could have ever imagined, he still was able to knock “it” down and conquer.

David and Goliath

This sounds like another story about a certain boy, named David, defeating a giant, but only using a slingshot and a stone. Even though Goliath was much bigger than David, he still faced him head-on and believed that he could defeat him, and he did!

What are your giants?

Although these two stories regarded physical, human giants, your giant(s) can be debt, insecurity, physical health, friendships, mental health, relationships, work, marriage, and so much more! Any of these circumstances can feel like such a huge issue in your life and may cause you to feel like you can never defeat or conquer them, but know that you CAN! If David and Jack could defeat the giants in their lives, so can you!

Your Tools to Defeat Giants

What I gathered from each one of these stories are five things: having faith, courage, working with what you have (ex: ax, slingshot, and stone), taking risks, and persevering. If you keep the faith even when things are looking bad, dare to face your problems, work with whatever resources you have, take a risk or chance to tackle the issue, and never give up, you can and will conquer those giants in your life!

Thank You! Thank you Alicia for reminding our readers that it doesn’t matter how big your “giants” get, you can win! ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿพ – Leeann
